Rehabilitation center Groot Klimmendaal, Koen van Velsen
Description
Groot Klimmendaal Rehabilitation Center is partly a publicly accessible building with a diversity of (care) functions. It contains a sports center and swimming pool, a theater with foyer, a restaurant, a dental practice, a clinic and outpatient clinic, apartments, offices and various other facilities. The building is compact, efficient, full of character and takes full advantage of the green environment. It deliberately does not have a 'care image' and is open, transparent and accessible.
The building and the surrounding landscape, both designed by Koen van Velsen architects, mark the first phase of the master plan. This master plan provides for the concentration of (existing) functions in three new compact buildings of high quality and at the same time provides for the transformation of the site into a green park for rehabilitation and the environment.
Groot Klimmendaal was voted Building of the Year in 2010 by the Association of Dutch Architects and winner of the Heuvelink Prize of the city of Arnhem, the first Hedy d'Ancona Prize for excellent healthcare architecture and the Dutch Design Award audience award. In 2011, the building was chosen as a finalist for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award and was voted the best 'health' building in the world during the World Architecture Festival.
